Our Unit 1 math test will be tomorrow. For homework tonight, students have a self assessment to complete. The self assessment lists all of the skills that will be on tomorrow's test. They also have a review packet for optional practice at home tonight. The review packet is not a required homework assignment.

Students should be bringing home graded ELA assignments on a regular basis. Most assignments that students complete are graded and handed back within a week. Most of the math work that students do is kept in their math journals so you may not see corrected math work (except for homework) coming home until the unit test is given. If it has been a while since you have seen any of your child's corrected work, please check in their homework folder or contact me.
Tomorrow students will be bringing home the social studies test they took on Monday. The final section on the test about the Northeast and Southeast regions is used just as a preview for the next unit and was therefore not counted as part of their test grade. Since the start of the school year, students have been studying the states in the Northeast region. They have learned about landmarks, culture, and natural resources in these states. At the end of the unit, they will be tested on these things. They will also be expected to label a blank map of the Northeast region with each state's name and the name of its capital city. The link below has a game that students can use at home to practice the states and capitals by region.
http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/web_games.htm Tonight is our school's Curriculum Night! Parents will have a chance to meet their child's teacher and learn about the expectations for fourth graders. I hope to see you all here at Willett from 6:00-8:00 tonight!
Welcome to our classroom blog! I will use this section of the website to keep students and families informed about what is going on in room 003 this year!
As a conclusion to our weather unit in science, students have had the opportunity to work with a few different weather instruments. Students worked with a partner to construct their own wind vanes. Then we took them outside to test them. They were a success! Using their wind vanes and a compass, students were able to determine the direction of the wind!
It has been such a long, hard winter this year, and we are more than ready for Spring! Our class started our own flower garden today to help us "Think Spring". Students worked together to sort, plant, and label seeds. They will be observing the growing process as part of our science curriculum, and we will hopefully be enjoying some beautiful flowers in our classroom soon!
We will be having our Sundaes and Strategies event after school next week to get students ready for the PARCC assessment.
The fourth graders will be singing the song, "We've Got Strategies" to the tune of "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge. The lyrics are below for anyone that would like to practice singing the song this weekend! Chorus (2x): We’ve got strategies There’s a great test taker in me We’ve got strategies So we’re gonna do our best! Everyone knows that we’re great test takers As we walk on by (And) And we read questions twice Like detectives So our scores will fly (All) All of the people Around us they say Can they be that smart? Just look at all of our writing Our responses are like works of art Chorus (2x) Working hard can be fun And we’ve just begun To get our skills just right (HIGH) high hopes we have For our scores And our goal is in sight (We!) no we don’t get depressed Here’s what we call our golden rule Have faith in you and your answers too You won’t go wrong It’s a Willett rule Chorus (2x) We had an exciting visitor in our classroom yesterday! Mr. Newton, a cartographer, came to talk to the students about his job. He brought along with him a map of North America that he had drawn. He worked with the students to help them label the major bodies of water, countries, and states. The students made a lot of progress and did a wonderful job! We will continue to work on completing our maps in class.
Students will be taking a test on the Midwest region of the United States this Friday, December 12th. They will need to identify each state in the region and name its capital. They will also be tested on the landmarks, climate, resources, and culture of the region. Students will be able to bring home study materials each night this week to help prepare for the test.
