Welcome back to school! Our school year is off to a great start! The students are learning the new routines and expectations in room 003. We expect all of our fourth graders here at Willett to be good role models for our younger students at school. Students in all grades are expected to follow the Willett Way in all areas of the building, including in our classroom.

Our class is scheduled to visit the book fair tomorrow, February 7th from 9:30-10:00. Only students who bring money to school will be visiting the book fair during this time.
The main strategy that we teach in fourth grade is called partial-products multiplication. This is similar to the traditional algorithm, but it is focused on place value (the value of each digit in a given number). I know that this is new to most parents and may be frustrating to try to help your children with their homework. I hope the example below is some help. Students also have a Student Reference Book and a math notebook that they can bring home every night to help with homework.
Students will take their social studies test on the southeast region of the United States on Thursday, December 8th. They are able to bring home study materials any night this week.
In math we are learning all about fractions! Students are expected to find equivalent fractions and compare and order fractions by size. Students are able to bring home their math notebooks each night to help them with their homework.
In reading, we are getting to the end of our story, The Flunking of Joshua T. Bates. Students are really enjoying the story and are doing a great job of demonstrating their comprehension of the text! They are also reading a nonfiction story called, So You Want to Be President, in their Reading Street books. They are learning all about past Presidents and what it takes to do that job. In writing, students are working on personal narratives. We are working together to edit and revise, and they will be writing final drafts soon! In social studies, students are learning all about the states in the Southeast region. When we are getting close to the end of the unit, the test date will be in students' planners. They will need to know the states and capitals along with information about the natural resources, land and water, climate, and culture of the region. For the last few weeks, students have been working on a research project in class. The final project is due this Friday, November 18th. Although this was a project done completely in class, some students who did not manage their class time appropriately may be feeling pressure to finish the project on time. They will be given time each day this week to finish up in ELA. They will also be given time to work on the project in the mornings if they are able to finish their morning work quickly.
Thanks to the PTO, our fourth graders now have premium memberships to www.spellingcity.com! Each student should have their individual username and password stapled into the inside of their planner. This is a great resource for studying spelling words at home. Now that students have a premium membership, they will have access to many more games to practice their words!
Due to the Veteran's Day holiday on Friday, our spelling test will be on Thursday this week. Students know that they may need to do a little extra practice at home this week, since they have one less day to study! We need one extra day for unit 2 in math, so we will be taking the unit 2 test on Wednesday and the cumulative test on Thursday. Students will be bringing home their review sheet on Tuesday night.
We are coming to the end of unit 2 in math. We will spend a day reviewing on Monday and plan to test on Tuesday. We also have a cumulative math test to give on Wednesday that assesses the skills that students were taught in both units 1 and 2. All students are able to bring home their math notebooks and student reference books every night to help with homework or to study for their tests.
Our class will be able to visit the book fair on November 1st from 9:30-10:00. The book fair will also be open in the evenings during conferences and on the night of the school dance. Volunteers are always welcome!
